So when I was filling out the "favorite music" section I re-realized (is that a word?) something about myself...an ugly truth about myself. I'm prejudice against women singers. *hangs head in shame* To quote Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice (one of my all time favorite books/movies) "Tell me...are you always this harsh in regard to your own sex?"
The answer, Mr. Darcy, is "YES." This is a hard fact I realized about myself some time ago. A few years ago I got an ipod touch from my friend Ben and when I was selecting music to switch over I realized how heavy I was on the male singers...the likes of Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Jason Mraz and Ryan Adams filled most of my auditory pleasure waves. I'll admit it...I like male singers more than female singers. I'm not sure why. I think for awhile there were alot of female pop "musicans" who didn't write their own music or if they did it was crap. I think alot of girls sell out and subscribe to the "sex sells" mentality rather than digging deep and writing about mature, toughtful themes. Honestly, I haven't stumbled across too many female artists who paint verbal pictures for me the way my boys do. Like any thing though...there is a but/unless
Here is where the UNLESS comes in... I like them more unless the girl singing has a hearty, powerful voice. I like it when girls sing powerfully. My girls are Aretha, Etta James, Tina Turner, Miranda Lambert and a few others...i like them to "bring it!"
What about you? What music do you love?
